Please identify your frequency of practice in response to the following questions. Although “correct” answers may be implied by the questions, please answer according to your current behavior.
  1. 1. Before assigning a project manager or team member, I make sure that the project has been authorized by management.

  2. 2. When multiple projects need one of my staff and there is not enough time for all of them, I satisfy the projects according to my understanding of business needs and notify my manager and the requester(s) which project(s) will not get resources immediately.

  3. 3. I re-delegate to my staff every request which comes to me from above.

  4. 4. I get concerned that by appointing a Project Manager, they will make decisions or take actions I would not do if I were running the project.

  5. 5. When I appoint a Project Manager, I discuss with the Project Manager his/her responsibilities and mine, so that we both avoid role confusion.

  6. 6. I make it clear to the Project Manager that my responsibility is to manage them (Project Manager), not the project.

  7. 7. When I communicate a target date to a Project Manager, I make sure the Project Manager understands why the target date was set as it was. If I don’t know, I find out.

  8. 8. I meet each week with the Project Managers in my department for 15-30 minutes to discuss their projects.

  9. 9. In my department, I make sure each Project Manager delivers to me a project plan (appropriately sized), which I sign (approve) as adequate for getting the job done.

  10. 10. The Project Managers who work for me give me a one-page written status report each month, whether I ask for it or not.

  11. 11. The scope of our projects tends to expand when we get into them.

  12. 12. When scope expansion will change cost or schedule, I make sure that my Project Managers get management approval for the changes.

  13. 13. When I support projects by providing team members, I discuss with the Project Manager the needs of the project before appointing team members.

  14. 14. I continue to stay close to project team members from my department during the project, providing supervision appropriate to their level of experience.

  15. 15. When the Project Manager is from another department and I disagree with the direction she/he is taking with the project, I discuss the issue with the Project Manager before taking it to the Project Manager’s manager.

  16. 16. I assist the Project Manager in escalating difficult issues by providing access to my peers and above.

  17. 17. I coach my Project Manager on how to deal with politically complex issues affecting the project -- rather than automatically addressing them myself.
